As the summer draws on, many of us are looking forward to a well-earned summer break. In order to ensure that you get the most out of your holiday, we would like to offer you the following advice.
If you are taking a heavy suitcase on holiday, try and ensure it has wheels. This will make it easier to manoeuvre through the airport, although you will still have to be able to lift it in and out of the car, and onto and off of the baggage carousels.
If you have a problem with your neck or shoulders, then it is sensible to ask for assistance when placing hand luggage into the overhead lockers. Back packs are the most ergonomic way of carrying your hand luggage, and have the advantage of leaving both hands free, which is especially useful if you are travelling with small children or will be climbing on and off of a coach.
Whilst away on holiday there is the temptation to lay out on a sun bed to get a tan. If you have a back that is vulnerable, then laying on your tummy for a prolonged period is often a precursor to low back ache. This can be further exacerbated by arching up onto your forearms to read that holiday block buster. If you want to read, consider sitting in the shade to do it, and change position on a regular basis. Laying on your back with your knees slightly bent is better than laying flat out. Most sun loungers are not that supportive!
Lots of people return from their travels with a stiff neck or a sore back. This can often be attributed to sleeping in a different bed or using a different pillow. If you are accustomed to using a memory or orthopaedic pillow, why not take it with you? If you are travelling long haul, an aisle seat will give you the opportunity to get up and stretch your legs on a regular basis. This is not only better for your back, but will also help reduce the risk of conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
We regularly see patients you have returned from holiday with a sore back, but are too sunburnt to touch. Remember to pack your sun cream and apply it regularly.
Finally, if you have a bit of a niggle and are thinking of going away soon, why not give us a ring for an appointment to get it sorted before you go on holiday.
